Twenty months after breaking ground, TMSC will hold an opening ceremony tomorrow for its first fab in Japan in Kumamoto. It will go on mass production by the end of 2024.

What a refreshing yet old idea from a government official 😉

How Japan Pulled Off an Early Victory in the Race to Make More Chips

"“We committed to getting it ready in two years because that’s what TSMC asked us,” Kumamoto Governor Ikuo Kabashima said in an interview. “Being on time is important to win trust.”
Ask if TSMC got anyone they partner in Arizona that talks that or delivered any aspect like that.

There was complete failure from across the board including TSMC on the US project.

OK, very interesting.
So, if I get it right, they will start with 40nm tech (as the Kumamoto Governor is saying in the interview), then to 28nm, then to n7, which seems to be the more advanced node this fab will produce? Or all tech in parallel? (It's not clear from the tsmc press kit: https://pr.tsmc.com/english/news/3113).

You mis-understood some parts in the interview. Before tsmc Kumamoto Fab, Japan only have 40nm and above tech nodes. jasm will provide wafers from 28/22 and 16nm nodes.

Totatally untrue
Can you share the highlights that you know of? Usually we talk about wins from startup and greenfields. 1) ahead of schedule 2) below at cost 3) new markets opened 3) Positive relationships for future collaboration 4) Talent development 5) Reputation and brand name improvement.

Interested in where you see there was something postive. From what I hear no money has yet to be given by the government even after two years!
