ARM, A Knowledge Foundry, World Peace

Arthur Hanson

Well-known member
The Foundry model is the best way to assure world peace. Neutral Foundries are a critical step in keeping world peace and and progress. Let different countries own different types of foundries and the world become more interconnected and interdependent. This is the best way to radically drive up the price of starting a military conflict on all sides. The more types of neutral foundries the world can develop in more areas, the more opportunity and prosperity there will be for everyone and ARM, TSM and others are great examples of foundries. China has many contract manufacturers in numerous areas that literally have become foundries of production that are unmatched in efficiency and time to market. Israel has the equivalent of security foundries. India has clothing and pharmaceutical foundries. All major countries either have foundries of some type or develop them. The more interdependent the world becomes, the higher the cost conflict and this is a good trend. It is imperative that the cost of conflict is driven so high that political structures come to realize military investment and conflict returns become so negative that investment shifts to progress rather than destruction. This would also put pressure on all to help mitigate conflicts to point that despots and maniacs that promote it become more and more isolated as time passes. As we have seen repeatedly, a neutral foundry model is the fastest way to progress and spreading wealth. If Nvidia does get the approvals to buy ARM, which is doubtful, it should take a strictly hands off approach to customers and make its goal to make it a better knowledge foundry with neutral access for the greatest return for itself and its customers. Hopefully the tech sector can continue an ever growing role in this trend by constantly improving communications and collaboration tools that power this trend. Any thoughts, comments and additions solicited and welcome.

I do not think your argument is right. I am a pacifist as are many scientists.
If there is another WWII scenario, physicists will have no problem quickly
building world class foundaries. For example, if engineering without physicists
such as WIlliam Schockley had developed transistors, there would be no
field effect transistors. We would still be in a world of point contact transistors.

I wish it was that simple.

Life is never simple, but it would be a start, even the longest journey starts with a single step. A world wide system for dealing with intellectual property rights would be a good place to start. Good fences, make good neighbors. The staggering amount of money and effort spent on conflict just shows how technology in vastly outrunning our ability to manage and deal with it. Lowering the cost of education world wide would also be a good place to start.

It is unlikely that Mr WIlliam Schockley held the keys to the universe of FETs, I am 100% certain that other researchers would have arrived to similar solutions sooner or later, but the point is a good one. We need to start somewhere, RISC V took the step of moving its headquarters to a neutral country... a sad statement to the state of affairs but it does point to the need that Mr Hanson explains. Yes, never simple but we can start with one step, then lets take another.

I have heard William Shockley borrowed much of his work from one of the researchers under him, much to this persons dismay. This researcher was a professor emeritus at UC Berkeley and was known for his integrity and honesty.
