Son on the Singularity, When AI will Rule, the "Great Acceleration:" on Steroids

Son on the Singularity, When AI will Rule, the "Great Acceleration:" on Steroids

Masayoshi Son became perhaps the most powerful player in tech with the purchase of ARM and the drive towards artificial intelligence. He feels 2018 will be the crossing point of AI over human intelligence. Even if he is off by a few years, the ramifications are beyond any scope most have imagined, for all the rules, gauges and measures get tossed out the window as the foundation they are built on changes. This is going to be like throwing more than a few jokers in the deck for a card game, but this time the game is the world social and economic order. This will have potential to allow the automation of everything. It holds more danger and promise than anything man has ever attempted. All of this is built on a foundation of semis and software. What makes this all the more powerful is the web and communication infrastructure that allow this to spread world wide in literally moments. More than any type of power we have worked with before, this will require wisdom, for we have never faced such a change with so much potential for good and harm through a "Great Acceleration" of power and distribution that we haven't not seen before, but for most, not even contemplated. SemiWiki is just one of the venues where this issue should be debated and thought given to.

Medical is but one huge part of our economy that will be altered. It's estimated fifty percent of a doctor's time is for diagnostics, which in area after area as AI is implemented, it proves better than even the best doctors. As this spreads it will radically change medical, which is almost 20% of our entire GDP. Due to supply and demand AI combined with bionics from the semi/nanotech industry medical could again become a competitive area where cost can actually be driven down instead of going up all the time.

Arthur,
I'm 59 years old, however for the past 4 decades the experts and sci-fi movies have predicted the Singularity is right around the corner. I'd be totally surprised if something as ambitious as the Singularity happened in 2018 or even 2118, so call me a nay-sayer.

Dan, I have followed Son for many years and have been amazed at the technology and business deals he has pulled off. In fact, I wish I had put my money on him many times, I would be much richer. I feel if anybody succeeds in AI, it will be an ARM device and Son is in a better position than anyone else to know what's in their labs. With IP theft rampant, a technology such a AI would be kept under tight wraps. My personal feeling on AI is 2021. I don't feel and haven't felt the previous predictions weren't credible and I worked on the power systems on a Cray when I as thirty.

I bet human level A.I is already in existence, the military is years ahead of consumer electronics when it comes to the technologies that really matter.

Agreed the danger is in the military as they often think about how to kill humans and win battles, not helping humans. Don't see a reason how people can get enough for A.I. development otherwise if purpose is not to help people.
