The real impact of the Apple decision will be on IOT for without encryption there soon would be no privacy anywhere or any time. The fact that the government has turned down McAfee's offer to crack the phone in question in three weeks for free tells us the President's real intention (the heads of the agencies involved serve at the President's pleasure) is to have an all intrusive state and really has little o do with a single phone. Tim Cook and the leaders of Silicon Valley are no fools and see a very dangerous precedent if encryption can be bypassed by any government. It is a decision between an all intrusive Big Brother and a free population. It goes to the old saying "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". Silicon Valley and it's leaders are taking the lead in the marriage of high tech and civil rights for the benefit of everyone. I hope Tim Cook and his supporters prevail. The Apple vs Intrusive government decision is probably one of the most important decisions to the future of Silicon Valley and US high tech of all time for this reason. Comments and thoughts welcome
Possible technical solution:
Form a public listed firm dedicating to cyber security gateway between IT companies and government.
The financial report each quarter will tell how many phone breaching cases.
With proper representatives from each IT giants inside the gateway firm, the technical issues can be solved easily. I think in this case, everyone should be happy.

As reality demonstrates again and again on major issues and undertakings, secrets have a very short half life. The plans for the first nuclear bomb were stolen within 90 days of completion and that was under threat of a certain death penalty.
