VSMC - New FAB going up in Singapore [Video]

Just a question on FAB construction , 200m away is the shell of the old AUO FAB that close a couple of years , is it easier to build on greenfield site , than repurpose an old FAB? This is going up fast!

The SSMC (Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Company) fab in Singapore, a joint venture involving TSMC (28% stake), NXP, and Singapore’s Economic Development Board Investments, primarily focuses on manufacturing 8-inch wafers. Based on available information, SSMC produces chips using process geometries ranging from 0.35μm (350nm) to 0.13μm (130nm). These nodes are typically used for analog, mixed-signal, high-voltage, and embedded non-volatile memory applications, catering to automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics markets.

Refit a facility to meet different semiconductor production requirements and those specific company fab designs won't be cheaper or faster.

So not any benefit to fire up FAB shells then in the hope that random company will come and take over?

The new FAB is VSMC , it is supposedly going to be manufacturing at the 40nm level and above.
Vanguard is the largest partner but they are partly owned by TSMC anyway , hence the collaboration.

It is a very expensive and impractical investment to build a fab shell for unknown semiconductor production requirements that may never materialize.

The closed AUO LCD factory in Singapore may have potential in advanced packaging for the semiconductor industry. TSMC bought an old LCD factory form Innolux Corporation and Micron bought one from AUO, both are in Taiwan, for their advanced packaging operations.
