As a responsible corporate citizen, TSMC is committed to the principle of “Leaving No One Behind” and supporting the communities where the Company operates through charitable giving and volunteerism around the world. In the United States, TSMC North America has partnered with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, one of the largest food banks in the nation, with the mission to end hunger by organizing food, information, and support for those in need. Since November 2022, all functional groups of TSMC North America have participated in eight volunteer events and donated 394 hours to sort and pack over 187,000 lb of produce distributed to nearly 7,500 families in the community. By volunteering, our employees have directly contributed to the food bank’s efforts to help ensure that people in the San Francisco Bay Area get the food and nutrition they need.
Employee Volunteer Initiatives Create a Culture of Giving Back
This volunteer activity was initiated by TSMC North America Volunteer Service, a group of six TSMC North America employees who wanted to foster a better teamwork among the Company employees while engaging with and providing support to the communities where TSMC operates. The service group conducted surveys among employees in North America to gather ideas and chose to partner with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, a food bank near the TSMC North America San Jose office, after evaluating various types of volunteer opportunities. This partnership ensures that employees can easily participate in the initiative to support the mission of helping those in need and giving back to the local community. One employee volunteer event is organized every other month, where volunteers work a shift lasting two to three hours, sorting and packing fresh produce into boxes weighing 25 pounds. Each box is intended to provide a week's worth of fresh produce including various types of fruits and vegetables for a family of four.
The number of participants per volunteer event has steadily increased from nine to over 20 people per event through collaboration with internal teams such as human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) to broadcast the volunteering opportunities and attract more employees to participate. Since November 2022, over 100 TSMC North America employees, or about 20% of the San Jose site's employees, have participated in the initiative thus far. Post-event online surveys revealed that this endeavor enhances employee engagement, builds team cohesiveness, boosts employee fulfillment and morale, and, more importantly, makes a positive impact on the community. Furthermore, it creates a culture of giving back that encourages all employees to make an effort toward the goal of a sustainable future.
