It is not about what you say or what I say. Without tariffs, TSMC would never made this decision.

Majority of reports from Taiwan painted this in a not a good way. Even the top analyst from Taiwan think this will depressed margin.

The media you linked is known to be pro-China and is not indicative of the general Taiwanese viewpoint. However, given the significant resources the CCP invests in propaganda in Taiwan, it's possible that this could change in the future.

The one who spoke in the video is TW congressman HSIEH LUNG-CHIEH of pro-China Kuomingtang (Chinese Nationalist Party) who is likely to run for 2026 Tainan city mayor election.

We had this argument before... Please check all the news from Taiwan before TSM announcement. No one whether green, blue, or white thought any of those options including the 100B investment would be a good thing for TSM or Taiwan. It is a compromise in the context of tariffs.

What the 100B investment means, some takeaways:
1-TSMC is satisfied with the ramp in AZ. This was always somewhat of a question, doubted by Morris Chang, and he was wrong.
2-TSMC AZ has room for 10 fabs. With this latest tranche, 5 have been announced. That's normal pace for a TSMC site in recent years.

Can you understand Mandarin? If so, set a search criteria for the date range and search all videos by Taiwanese media on Youtube for that date range, use complex Chinese ask the keyword to search TSMC. Gauge it yourself.

4x is probably about right, based on taking longer (about 2x) and other costs higher (about 2x). Over the course of a decade, if fabs continue to be built in the USA, that gap will reduce until it reaches parity.

I think we'll see Applied Materials shifting production of most tools from Singapore to Austin. That may help reduce the time gap. But that probably depends on the tariffs staying in place for a long time.

This YouTube video is funny yet absurd. The guest and the host actually claimed that TSMC would spend 5 to 10 times more to build a fab in Phoenix than in Taiwan. However, the subtitles added during post production stated it was "4x more expensive." It seems the producer found the original "5 to 10 times more expensive" claim unconvincing and attempted to tone it down.

It is my hope and practice that we share credible information on SemiWiki. This is the only way to keep this platform healthy, efficient, and productive.
 
What is odd , I am assuming that most folk on here are working in the industry in some form or another , yet seem to want those in the industry to get paid rock bottom in order to keep margin and shareholder
value to the max.

I can’t believe anyone is happy with the schedule and delays and hidden costs with the Fab21 P1 ramp. Did they finally come up matched but the hidden things make it clear that you will never do a HVM lead node ramp in the Us for schedule, cost, risk etc.

What to big investment is really is to publicly announce P3 for N2, P3 for A16 and P4 for N1 and maybe more incremental capacity of those. In additional phases. The construction and ramp simply can’t match those in Taiwan even if King Trump approves thousands of E2 visas for both the trades as well as the assignees the ramp will be delayed.

In my mind this is a nothing annoucement
