With IP having not only more value generation for an economy or company, but an ever shorter shelf life due to advancements, Tekcapital has developed a curated IP platform for university research. Universities have the advantage of being able to spread their research cost over a much broader base than most companies and even for the largest companies this is an invaluable tool. With IP becoming ever more important and faster moving, this is but one more tool to manage its use. IP management is just in its early phases and is already critical to the tech sector and as tech spreads into everything, IP management will become one of the most critical parts of almost any company. In tech, IP management is becoming has become the foundation on which success is built or destroyed. I hope this is but one more useful tool for the SemiWiki community. I see this area growing rapidly with the "Great Acceleration" being the driver. Good curation of knowledge is key to our society moving ahead, for without it, the process of applying information become wasteful, inefficient and most severely, untimely.
Art,
Just a quick clarification, the Forbes article considers IP (Intellectual Property) all of the ideas generated by University researchers, while in our narrow domain of Semiconductor IP it means cells, blocks, modules and systems in either hard or soft formats for use inside of SoCs.
Dan, with the semi industry building mems and nanotech covering areas from medical, testing, monitoring and many other areas, the areas of research required by the fab industry is getting broader and deeper everyday. The semi industry has becoming the nanotech industry and is no longer strictly about traditional semis. The range of things a fab can build is almost unlimited and will adapt to follow the money and the amounts of money to follow are far larger than the current semi industry. We have barely scratched the surface of the nanotech world, that is only limited by the imagination and still very, very young. Curation of knowledge is key, for without it, access if limited, inefficient and time consuming, which is the kiss of death for information can go obsolete if not used in a timely manner. This is exactly what made Google great and they are just one step of the process.
