Silicon Valley's Greatest Opportunity, Health Care

Arthur Hanson

With the US ranking 50th in efficiency in health care, this represents the largest opportunity for Silicon Valley. If Silicon Valley doesn't tackle this severe problem that takes close to 20 cents of every dollar spent the system that supports it will be in danger of collapse. Already restaurant revenues are declining because heath care costs are sucking the money out of family budgets. This trend will soon expand to all areas and endanger the very foundations of Silicon Valley. This could even force many of the companies to put even more of their operations off shore, creating a snow ball effect going down hill. Efficiency is everything when it comes to economics. Silicon Valley has the capability to dramatically lower health care costs if the government will get out of the way. The Epipen is but one of thousands of examples how the government drives up costs due to mountains of self serving regulations.

The choice in the next election is who handles money/resources better, the government or private industry, this is what the choice boils down to. Health care costs around the world are going up as the world population ages, presenting the richest market of all for the technologies the Silicon Valley creates, from software to hardware and even social media in how it influences the health of our life style. This is but one example why Silicon Valley should exert as much power and influence to benefit itself and the nation.
