Semis/Mems/Sensors offer a solution to one of the most expensive, life devastating problems an individual, organization or country can have. Obesity is a severe, expensive and debilitating problem that is increasing world wide at a dramatic rate, even among children. Eating as any dieter or even athlete knows is hard to track on a real time, accurate basis. Fitness trackers combined with sophisticated sensors will hold the key to getting a handle on this problem by giving a person real time feedback. With machine learning it will be possible to develop programs with the input of sensors soon to be or currently available to track metabolism, blood sugar, heart rate, respiration, oxygen and other measurements to allow one to track calorie burn real time. Combined with a smart phone and a flat digital scale the size of a smart phone and using the smart phone as a display, it will be possible for a person to track their eating real time to achieve optimum calorie burn for optimum diet and performance. The camera function on the smart phone, combined with the scale can instantly give a very close calorie count of foods consumed. Combined all these functions will give a person real time diet results and will be able to calculate weight loss very closely on a real time basis. This will eliminate much of the problems most dieters now face in having no accurate real time way to gauge how much food to consume to maintain am optimum diet for weight loss. Over time programs like this could be optimized for any number of medical conditions and diseases. The linkage between diet, health and exercise could be optimized in ways we haven't even imagined. If all this diet and fitness data is anonymized and put in the cloud there is no telling the discoveries we could make to improve our lives in ways we haven't even imagined.

This is a very large opportunity for the semi/nanotechnology market to greatly improve our health, productivity, increase working life and demonstrate it's a high value, high return investment in a better life and future for all.

I think that you may be over-thinking this issue about obesity and technology. We have thousands of years of experience showing that your personal attitude, motivation and support group are the primary influencers to get out of obesity and back into a healthy condition.

Remember the popular TV realty show, The Biggest Loser? The Biggest Loser (U.S. TV series) - Wikipedia

It showed how morbidly obese people could lose massive amounts of weight and become healthy again, but they each had private coaches leading them every step of the way through changing their attitudes and behaviors, no tech was required.
 
Dan, I agree with you, but feel the coaching process could be automated and continuous, which few people could afford, let alone actually do. It's also hard to do when with weight loss currently, you don't have instantiations feed back like new technologies can give. I feel this could be the game changer. Like you I engage in fitness everyday, incorporated into my life style. If I don't work out formally in a day, I clean the house or do landscaping for a workout. I eat twenty ounces plus of vegetables every day, it's either that or junk food. I was a junk food, but burned 4K calories a day in my work. I was well known for literally running people twenty years younger into the ground on the job. I specialized in building data distribution networks large and small(one job I had four engineers and 17 techs under me).
