According to different sources Samsung chip sales will surpass those of Intel this quarter for the first time ever. I had a meeting with Samsung in Seoul a few years back and was told the same thing, that Samsung was going to be the #1 semiconductor company in the world. The presentation was not memory centric, it was back when Samsung was first working on their Exynos SoC. I didn't believe it back then but I certainly believe it now, Samsung is definitely a semiconductor force to be reckoned with.

And now Samsung chip revenue is estimated at $15.1B in Q2 2017 while Intel Q2 2017 revenue is estimated at $14.4B. Samsung semiconductor revenue is said to be mostly memory with mobile and IoT. Full year 2017 revenue forecasts for Samsung and Intel are $63.6B and 60.58B and I actually see Intel's revenues being eaten away a bit by AMD in the coming quarters.

So congratulations to Samsung Semiconductor!

And for those of you who still think IoT stands for Incredibly Optimistic Thinking you may want to reconsider!

Dan, I wonder how much out of control medical cost for Intel contribute to this problem? I know there is a great enough difference in medical cost to be a significant enough factor to not be ignored.

I'm loving the speed upgrade brought to both of my 2011 MacBook Pro laptops by replacing the hard drives with Samsung SSD devices, it cut the boot time by 3X, and apps open with little delay.

With a hard drive I would click to open an App and the icon for the app would bounce several seconds on the dock as the hard drive sent data to the RAM.

On my 2017 MacBook Pro the Samsung SSD came standard.

I think it's a safe bet TSMC has the largest chip sales for many of Samsung's chips go into their own products.

Samsung does not break out the foundry business but if you look at memories it is about $10B and logic is about $7.5B. Now that Samsung Foundry owns all of the logic business it will count internal Samsung customers as revenue. So that puts at TSMC at #1, Samsung #2, GF #3, UMC #4, SMIC #5, and I don't even think Intel Foundry made it into the top ten.
