I somewhat disagree with your premise of “…the market wants more than one choice”. The market wants limited risk and assured success. Having 2+ solutions does not guarantee either. Having a single dependable quality solution even at a premium is in the end more affordable than multiple options of perceived greater risk. Until others offer an equivalent low risk path their mere existence will not be enough to satisfy the market.
There is always risk in leading edge node development even TSMC had issues with initial N3 now called N3B recently Intel's 10nm is a story to be studied same with Samsung with yield issue. No matter how good you are there is always a chance that things don't turn out the way you expect.

The market wants competitive pricing not monopolies. The market wants competition and innovation, not lazy leadership. I grew up with Intel and AMD and have seen them happily leapfrog only to see AMD play dead for many years and without competition Intel got lazy. And a lazy Intel lost the lead to both AMD and TSMC. Today we have all three players bringing their A game and it is exciting again. That was my point. Unfortunately I ate too many Cadbury eggs and was not clear of mind yesterday.
I for one wants to buy product that are cheaper and faster than predecessor that is only possible with competition see the GPU Market where Huang is milking gamers.
