How Amkor, a Korean-American Packaging Powerhouse, Is Reemerging to take on ASE

Amkor, long viewed as a quiet legacy player in the OSAT landscape, is suddenly back at the center of the global semiconductor conversation.

Once the world’s No. 1 packaging house, the Korean-American firm is now investing USD 7 billion in Arizona to anchor the United States’ push for advanced-chip manufacturing. The move positions Amkor as a critical partner to TSMC, Nvidia, Apple, and even Intel, which recently tapped the company’s Songdo facility for EMIB packaging.

As CoWoS capacity tightens and hyperscalers scramble for alternatives, Amkor’s resurgence is challenging ASE’s dominance and rewriting industry expectations. This week’s issue takes a closer look at how a company with American skin but Korean roots is reemerging on the right side of semiconductor history.
