Googlel to Bring AI and Machine Learning to the Clound

Google to Bring AI and Machine Learning to the Clound

I listened to Fei-Fei Li Google's chief cloud scientist and they are planning to bring AI and machine learning to the cloud to democratize it for business. This should create whole new markets for advanced semis, not only in the data center, but in businesses that create new products that use this previously unavailable vast new power. This will create the ultimate "Great Acceleration" of new products and services to the point it changes our very social structure at almost every level. This development not only holds great promise but great danger. As technologists, we must learn to use this new very, very powerful technology carefully, for if not handled properly, it could very easily give rise to some very ugly and destructive actions in a society unprepared for it. Careful thought must be given to any great new power and this is one of the greatest, I feel far, far greater than nuclear power. Man kind has never confronted a power this great and as with much potential, for this will be the very first time we will be confronted with something that can literally out think us. We should start preparing for this now at all levels of society, for the dangers if used improperly are beyond imagination, as is the promise. The SemiWiki community is just one of many, that should give this serious consideration and share potential solutions in harnessing this almost unlimited power for the greatest good. To leave this to chance in nothing short of irresponsible. Thoughts, comments and potential solutions or actions welcome and solicited.

Hi Arthur -- have you read or listened to David Deutsch on this subject? I doubt he would consider the current developments as being anywhere near (general) AI, but well worth a read.

Dan, I have been researching AI and machine learning and feel they are advancing than even most in the field realize. This is part of my thesis the "Great Acceleration" that applies to all technology. AI and machine learning will require a whole host of technologies, both is software and hardware to come together. Optical or Quantum computing may play a key role. Son, now the owner of ARM is the one I follow most closely because of his track record. I feel we may get some unexpected surprises out of Japan maybe. With all the resources devoted to AI and machine learning the pace of advancement is picking up speed on numerous fronts. I don't know which of the many efforts will win, but the more vectors a challenge is looked at, the better and faster the chance of success. My target date is 2021. The only question I have, is will it be fully sentient?
I personally feel this could be a far greater danger than nuclear weapons with the world being so interconnected and becoming more so every day. Interconnection of almost everything makes AI ever the more dangerous to handle when it arrives. I hope the require all AI to be air gapped initially, until we really know what we are dealing with. Releasing AI will be the ultimate gamble.
