Freescale brings Cortex-M7 to motor control

Don Dingee

Industrial strength motor control requires DSP, PWM, and mixed signal integration in a microcontroller. Freescale has launched the new Kinetis KV5x series of MCUs based on a 240 MHz ARM Cortex-M7 core with its DSP extensions and single precision FPU. Supporting the core is a 1MB on-chip flash with wide 256-bit interfacing to minimize wait states, 128 KB of data tightly coupled memory (TCM) and 64 KB of instruction TCM.

Peripherals include four 12-bit A/Ds capable of 5 Msps, and dual 12-channel eFlexPWMs with down to 312 picosecond resolution. Also on chip are an IEEE 1588 Ethernet controller for use in deterministic industrial environments, a crypto acceleration unit, and a memory protection unit. Packages vary from a 100-pin 14x14mm QFP to a 144-pin 13x13mm MAPBGA. Samples are planned for 2Q2015, no pricing was announced.
