SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Qualcomm has explored the possibility of acquiring portions of Intel's design business to boost the company's product portfolio, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
The mobile chipmaker has examined acquiring different pieces of Intel, which is struggling to generate cash and looking to shed business units and sell off other assets, the people said. Intel’s client PC design business is of significant interest to Qualcomm executives, one of the sources said, but they are looking at all of the company’s design units.
Titus weighed in on Intel’s position, noting that the PC segment remains vital for the company. “Even with the increased internal pressure, it does not make sense for Intel to lose its most dominant sector in the form of PCs,” Titus explained. He emphasized the importance of innovation in the semiconductor industry, especially as AI markets are poised for significant growth.
“I highly doubt Intel will be ready to sell its AI-focused designs right when the market is about to boom,” Titus added.
Qualcomm has been evaluating various parts of Intel’s design operations, with a particular interest in Intel’s client PC design business, according to a Reuters report.
Their claim of Arm vs x86 is proved wrong with Lunar Lake.
If Intel can get Panther Lake produced on time and with sufficient volume using their own fab, it might be harder for Qualcomm to compete. There are also Meteor Lake laptops (Intel 4) and 13/14 gen laptops (Intel 7) to compete with Qualcomm at lower price ranges.

I am guessing that Intel indeed looks to sell one part or the other of its business, so the vultures (sorry potential buyers) are trying to reduce the value so they can negotiate a better price. To be honest though, since this whole plan of Intel Foundry and Intel restructuring started a few years ago, the writing was on the wall and nothing that Intel did during this period helped turn the tide.
