Captured Russian Weapons Are Packed With U.S. Microchips

It takes a village....

Russian Weapons US Chips.jpg

When Ukrainian forces began to take apart several pieces of captured or partially destroyed Russian military equipment, they found a strong reliance on foreign microchips - especially those made in the United States - according to component lists Ukraine intelligence shared with The War Zone. The chips in question were found inside a recovered example of the 9S932-1, a radar-equipped air defense command post vehicle that is part of the larger Barnaul-T system, a Pantsir air defense system, a Ka-52 “Alligator” attack helicopter, and a Kh-101 (AS-23A Kodiak) cruise missile.

The component list offers some of the most detailed information to date about the extent of where the Russians are getting critical microchips, semiconductors and other components. The items on those lists raise serious questions about Russia's ability to produce the technological components its war machine relies on and the ability of countries like the U.S. to keep those technologies secure, an expert tells The War Zone. In the Barnaul-T air defense command post vehicle, for example, Ukraine intelligence said its specialists found eight microchips from U.S. manufacturers like Intel, Micrel, Micron Technology and Atmel Corp. in its communications systems. Ukrainian specialists also found five U.S.-made chips - manufactured by AMD, Rochester Electronics, Texas Instruments, and Linear Technology - in the direction finder of a Pantsir air defense system.

Russia has smic. There's something to the diversity of a Slavic language as well as a Germanic language (english) speaker as engineers. Russia is stumbling now but this conflict is far from over and the urgency of semiconductors in national defense has only begun.

No one is saying anything now but in time people will be talking about the importance of semiconductors in this conflict.

It isn’t just Russia. US supply of Javelins has been critically depleted and production can’t ramp up due to the age of the electronics that go into them. They will need to replace the 1980s electronics with something from the last 1-2 decades.

One thing about SMIC: They are not that far behind the west. Yangze Memory, not that far behind. There is a near equivalence between east and west In this new Cold War, that the geopolitical commentators, like Peter Zeihan and George Friedman don’t get.

Russian domestic semi process is in stuck in seventies. What they have is Zilinongrad is a Western fab, taking Western inputs. Russia has no own semi grade silicon manufacturers, let alone other semi grade ultrapure chemicals.

Most of Russian chem industry is controlled by EU companies + Dow.

Russia can turn to china but western Europe can't turn away from russia. Russia and Chinese cooperation will be an issue for years to come.

Western European countries will walk away from Russian oil and gas supply. Their national security consideration will always trump any other concerns. The long term relationship between European countries and oil and gas producing countries can ease the supply side issues. The main challenge is to change/enhance the infrastructure to accommodate a lot more LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) import.

That's the crux of the matter. American walkaway from Ukraine lets Russia controls Western Europe.

They already used this to smooth talk France, and now Germany into shutting down weapon shipments.

Brilliant statesmanship, if application of street wits can be called that. For all intents, and purposes, Russia was nearing an unstoppable rout in early March, and they would've crumbled if early April arms supply rates kept up.

Now Russians have got more influence over French, and Germans through losing, than they could've got if they outright won.

You probably underestimate European countries' concerns about their security and the threats from Russia.

"What has been agreed?
After nearly a month of wrangling, the European Union has agreed to a partial ban on Russian oil, with the aim of cutting off funding to the Kremlin’s war machine. According to the European Council president, Charles Michel, three-quarters of Russian oil imports will be immediately affected, rising to 90% by the end of the year."

Eastern European countries are indeed super scared, and keep sending whatever little military hardware they've got left. They support a war on Russia.

On other hand, the Western European nations are on the back foot, because they have no security whatsoever without US committing to it. German army can't field a single full division, let alone a field army. For them throwing East Europe under the bus == (temporary) security.

Anyways, a good advise to everybody younger than 30, be prepared for draft.
