We know a benchmark has made it when vendors start competing for the top spot, even mentioning how much better their scores are than the competition. EEMBC ULPBench has drawn attention from three vendors so far in 2015, the latest being Atmel. The new SAM L21 MCU, based on the ARM Cortex-M0+ core, has set a new high ULPBench score of 185.
Atmel is focusing on some incredibly low power figures. Their claims include 35uA/MHz active, 940nA with SRAM and RTC retention, and 200nA in deep sleep. Part of the picoPower family of advances is a technology known as Sleepwalking - where peripherals get a clock without waking up the core itself.
