Apple to use ARM CPU in MacBook laptops later in 2017?

We've been talking about how Apple has the technical prowess to design their own A-series chips for the iPhone and iPad products, so why not for their MacBook laptops, displacing Intel? Looks like the T310 may be the first ARM-powered CPU in a MacBook, planned for later in 2017.

Report: Apple to add ARM processor to Mac computers | EETE Analog

It's not displacing Intel here, it's a low-power CPU in addition to the high-power Intel one -- like big/little ARM in smartphones...

Ian,

OK, that makes more sense than a displacement strategy. How would an ARM-based processor execute commands intended for an Intel architecture? Don't you have to recompile all of your Mac apps to run with ARM then?

I wish Apple would put more effort into their (laptop) software. Hardware improvements are nice (maybe even necessary after recent power complaints), but software quality seems to continue on a downward slope. Example just a few minutes ago - I did a restart in lid-closed mode (connected to USB wired keyboard and trackpad, also flatscreen monitor), restart came up with keyboard not connected, trackpad connected, display connected. Can't enter my password without reopening the lid. This rarely happened to me with Windows.

You might say "just a small thing" but this is one of many. It's death by a thousand cuts and the number of cuts seems to accumulate with each new OS release. If Apple doesn't get its SW quality act together for Mac* it will never be a credible contender in business applications.

Sorry for the rant

Microsoft is said to be investing heavily in emulating x86 for compatibility with legacy applications in Windows 10 on ARM. This is rumor, but I think it's credible. Apple could be doing something similar. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/11/x86-emulation-rumored-to-be-coming-to-windows-for-arm-in-late-2017/

It is not just laptop software. iOS has been going the same way. Since the last update, a lot of iOS users at work are reporting shorter battery life or phones that suddenly shut down. And even the hardware quality is declining. Almost every iPhone or my partner has had in the past few years, has been in for repairs or swap out. I compare that to my Motorola G that I keep for my parents to use when they are visiting that is still going strong after 3 years and the two Asus tablets that my children use that are now 3 years old and still working fine.

Agreed, my brother (a major Apple advocate for a while) has become very disenchanted with Apple/iOS. email threads are completely messed up now, with mails repeating multiple times in a thread.
