Apple reveals first custom modem chip, shifting away from Qualcomm

Apple says C1 subsystem will give iPhones longer battery life

Apple plans to use its own modem chips across more devices in coming years

Qualcomm expects share of Apple modems to drop to 20% by 2026

SUNNYVALE, California, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab on Wednesday revealed its first custom-designed modem chip that will help connect iPhones to wireless data networks, a move that will make the company less reliant on chips from Qualcomm (QCOM.O), opens new tab that also power its Android rivals.

The chip will be at the heart of Apple's $599 iPhone 16e unveiled on Wednesday. Apple executives told Reuters these chips will roll out across its products in the coming years but did not give details on the timing.

The C1 subsystem is the most complex technology Apple has ever built, with a baseband modem manufactured with advanced 4-nanometer chipmaking technology and a transceiver made with 7-nanometer technology, Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technologies, said in an interview at one of Apple's silicon labs in Sunnyvale, California.

Apple's own in house modem (C1). Is this made by TSMC?

The Apple C1 cellular modem is manufactured by TSMC using 4nm and 7nm technologies.

This Apple C1 cellular modem is manufactured by using 4nm and 7nm node technologies. It seems that Apple is using TSMC to manufacture it, not a surprise.

It is about time. Apple has been working on a modem for YEARS! I believe the QCOM modems Apple used were also TSMC so it is not really a TSMC wafer design win but Apple will probably use TSMC packaging.

I had a minor mishap over the weekend. My iPhone 16 is now under my boat. My Apple insurance is not going to refund me since I did not have the Find My iPhone app on. It isn't even Apple insurance, it is a third party insurance company. First time I have lost an iPhone in 15+ years. I told them it is not really lost, I know exactly where it is, in 10 feet of water. :ROFLMAO: Lesson learned.

RIP to your iPhone.

imagining a Titanic scenario as you call after your phone as it sinks to the depths lol

There is a kid on youtube "Man v River"

He travel round US plucking phones from riverbeds and the sea, some been down there months and he send back to owner!

Should contact him he can recover your phone for content and give back to you!!!

it look like Apple will be a power house in the semis industry.

I thought Apple is a powerhouse in the semiconductor industry already.

Becoming "a powerhouse in the semi industry" was very cheap in 65nm era, and near impossible in the <10nm era.

I could've found you a crew to make a cookie cutter 3G phone SoC in 2010-2012 for around $1M in South Asia, which is a pocket change by semi standards these days.

The diver who cleans the bottom of my boat recovered my iPhone yesterday. I let it dry overnight and now it works! It was in cold saltwater for more than a week. IMPRESSIVE!

That’s actually pretty wild because it’s only IP68 rated which is “maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes”. I wonder what “bottom of the Bay for a week” rating would be equivalent to?

It had an Apple cover on it which probably helped. According to the diver the depth was 14-20ft, depending on the tide, and water temp is 53 degrees F. I will take it to an Apple store to have it checked out and see what they say.
