Talks are apparently advanced. Signals perhaps that Apple's internal GPU development wasn't going so well, also that (if this goes through) ARM Mali which is already doing pretty well gets to run the board with non-Apple customers, notably Samsung.
Also a nice way out for IMG who haven't been doing so well of late.
Yes, and just as I was getting ready to post about the recent layoffs (20%) at Imagination Technologies...... Now I have to go back and check with my sources...
Seems Apple formally denied it today.
"From time to time, Apple talks with companies about potential acquisitions. We had some discussions with Imagination, but we do not plan to make an offer for the company at this time."
I think it would be a lot better for the industry if Cadence or Mentor acquired Imagination rather than a systems house like Apple with no interest in existing customers.
Yeah, an Apple acquisition would spell the end of MIPS instantly, unless they somehow broke Imagination into chunks and spun MIPS back out. There is zero chance Apple switches from ARM to MIPS under any circumstances. Never. Ain't happening.
For the A8X Apple did a derivative design from Imagination IP (bolting two units together), but returned to stock PowerVR IP for the A9 and A9X.
Imagination is struggling, selling off the DAB operations of Pure and looking for a new CEO. As Paul pointed out, Apple has a very ingrained habit of sitting down with potential partners on a regular basis - most of the time it's just a friendly chat.
