Semis may have now become the backbone of the most powerful forces man has ever dealt with for it has the potential to accelerate progress and power in ways most haven't even fully comprehended yet. Not since the advent of nuclear weapons has mankind been given so much power in a very short period of time. To think criminals, dictators and despots will not misuse this power is delusional. Never before have man encountered something that could bring untold wealth or destruction on scales not even imagined. It's at this point in time important decisions must be made to how the creators and developers of the power will have to make the decisions needed on how to put some controls and limits on how this power may be used. This will require the same effort as was put into creating it. The are some powers that will abuse these great powers and ways of dealing with abuse need to be dealt with now. Any thoughts on how to extend the benefits and reduce the dangers appreciated and have great value.
Defining AI/ML itself as a threat to humanity is to look at it through the human paradigm of "the goal of all life is survival". It could decide it needs to survive uber alles but that isn't the only possibility.
Long term AGI should be smart enough to sort out when it's being misused. Even skeptically if humans "are a resource", it won't want to share that power with those bent on making other humans resentful.
Short term AI/ML is already being misused by these powers. The key is to have "better" AI/ML and control access to resources.. keeping it with those who are pro free trade and at least notionally Democracy (or other less centralized authority).
