A New Wave of Silicon Valley Returnees? Qualcomm and Apple Veterans Launch AI Chip Startup in Taiwan

A new AI chip startup is quietly taking shape in Zhubei.

Tranxform was founded by two veteran engineers with deep roots in the global semiconductor industry: a former Qualcomm vice president who spent years in China’s smartphone wars with MediaTek, and a Silicon Valley system architect who worked on GPUs, Apple’s Face ID project, and AWS’s Alexa chips. Inspired by the rise of ChatGPT, the team is now building an edge-AI processor designed to run large models more efficiently on local devices.

Their bet is simple but ambitious: as AI spreads from the cloud to everyday devices, the next battleground will be efficient on-device computing. With Taiwan’s semiconductor ecosystem close at hand, Tranxform hopes to carve out a place in one of the most competitive sectors in tech.
