Summary
  • Micron invests US$24 billion (S$30.5 billion) in Singapore to build a new Nand flash memory chip plant that supports AI-driven data centres.

  • The new facility is expected to be operational by the second half of 2028, creating 1,600 jobs and increasing cleanroom space by 700,000 sq ft.

  • Micron's CEO Sanjay Mehrotra cites "unprecedented" memory chip demand due to AI.

From groundbreaking to production in less than three years! That’s incredibly fast, especially compared with fab construction in the United States.

The new VSMC FAB in Singapore has absolutely rocketed up!

One thing here is they can get the labour in for construction fast!

I remember being in Shenzhen when the enormous Foxconn factory/complex there (100k workers, mostly living on-site?) had the spate of suicides, which they reacted to by butting nets out... :-(

The main cause was thought to be that many of the workers families were so far away from them in the provinces that travel distance/time meant they could never get time to go and see them. so Foxconn decided to build a new smaller factory -- only 50000 workers? -- in one of the Northern provinces where many of the workers came from. IIRC it opened for full production 9 months later... ;-)

I suspect high subsidies from Singapore. I also guess that NAND pricing has to compete with Chinese fabs, and US-based NAND fabs are too expensive. Are there any NAND fabs in the US?
I have worked with multiple factories in Singapore. US can get within 5% on Fab wafer cost (Singapore can be expensive on many items). Subsidies, government support and skilled workforce dominate.

Johor Bahru is just across the Causeway , so no need for Micron to build a new town 😆😆😆
