Would it be significantly "cheaper" to make a 7nm or 5nm-class fab today than it was 5-6 years ago? I always wonder if UMC or GloFo will ever offer (significantly) higher densities again..

The cost would likely would have increased if you account for Inflation and TSMC N7/N6 is decent bit cheaper and not volume constrained it would be a loosing battle

One thing I went through at Intel and as a consultant to other compainies.... Once you skip a node (or 3) the cost goes up. Its very hard to get back on. its like starting greenfield fab and greenfield R&D. Maybe buy old Intel facilities or old TSMC/Samsung facilities. Intel took way longer than they thought to optimize EUV. growing in 12nm+ is a good idea for these companies and let others focus on leading nodes. just an opinion.
