3 Fabs in India?

This is the third fab being planned in India, I am hearing in last 2 years!
Anyone knows about Cricket Semiconductor?

They are planning to start a Fab in India, of course with government funding for land, building, power, water....
Although I didn't hear anything about such plans in Indian Government budget announcement, it appears that
this is the 3rd Fab in planning in India. Anyone has more info on India fabs?

Last time, I had blogged about two Fabs being planned in India in Sep 2013 - https://www.semiwiki.com/forum/content/2764-semiconductor-manufacturing-india.html

At that time, there were two groups planning for two separate fabs - one led by JP Associates (an Indian construction, cement and power group) along with IBM and TowerJazz and the other led buy HSMC along with ST and Silterra.

Although, considering the burgeoning import of electronics in India, there are good reasons to have a fab in India, I see these plans on paper only. Need to see when at least one gets materialized!

I can understand because it's a analog specialty fab so the start up investment amount can be relatively smaller (at $1B) compare to many modern fabs. People can say it will be easier to start. But on the other hand it will probably meet a lot more competitors, either new comers or existing fabs. The risk for this low cost $1B fab start up is not necessary smaller. The low barrier to entry may actually add much more risks to its future operations.

Many countries have learned how to build and staff successful foundries (US, Taiwan, Korea, China, Germany, France, etc), why would we think India cannot?

Thanks Bill! Definitely, India also can and must have a fab. However, I have seen three fabs in planning since last 3 years, but none in near visibility to actually start operation.

Well, now the Indian Department of Electronics and Information Technology secretary has started talking about the approval of two fabs, which were given by previous government in 2013. One is led by JP Associated along with IBM and TowerJazz, and the other is led by HSMC (Hindustan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) along with ST Microelectronics and Silterra. The secretary, R. S. Sharma talked about these yesterday in the Indian Electronics Expo.

So, things are cooking up, we are going to see at least two fabs in India.
