Speaking at an event titled "Harnessing American Power" last month, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum expressed dismay at what he saw as a new wave of local opposition to data centers in America.

What's more, he claimed, not everything was as it seemed.

"It's not organic and local, some of this is foreign-sourced dark money," he told the crowd.

He isn't alone in his suspicions. Over on the podcast All-In, which is hosted by a group of tech multimillionaires who call each other "besties," there was also talk of foreign influence, specifically from China.

"It is starting to feel or seem like there might be a CCP-funded campaign," fund manager Gavin Baker told the hosts.

In many troubled countries, the government likes to go after those who report or complain about the problem, instead of going after the problem itself.
logically the claim Doug made is not out of the ordinary, considering the trend of geopolitics and what each of the two top powers can and want to do to the other

I agree - it is not an unlikely scenario. Let’s hope some serious, independent media with resources for investigative journalism dives into it… Wait… Do we have such a thing anymore?

This is definitely a 'both can be true' scenario.

Politicians and other leaders rarely hold themselves accountable, and will readily blame outside factors for whatever problem they're facing.

At the same time, financial interests (in this case, China) always do "information" campaigns to address their self-interests.
