Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has faced criticism of being late to the party in revealing its latest artificial intelligence innovations, but the iPhone maker has stealthily built a dream team of AI experts, according to an analysis by the Financial Times.
Apple has built this team, in part, by attracting AI engineers from rivals such as Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT), according to the report.
Apple has added at least 36 AI specialists from Google since 2018 when it hired John Giannandrea to be its top AI executive. It also pulled in at least 10 former Amazon AI experts, along with at least eight more each from Microsoft and Netflix (NFLX). It has gained AI professionals from Meta (META), Uber (UBER), Intel (INTC) and ByteDance (BDNCE) as well, the analysis discovered.
Although the majority of Apple’s AI team work out of offices in California and Seattle, the company also has a research lab in Zurich, the report added.
Apple has remained mostly mute on what AI offerings the company has in store for consumers, while rivals such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon have had regular announcements on new large language models and AI use cases.
The result has been Apple shares declining by 10% year to date, while other members of the Magnificent 7 have steadily gained.
Most analysts believe Apple will wait until at least the company’s Worldwide Development Conference in June to announce any major AI revelations. Others have speculated the company might wait until September when it reveals its latest iPhone to go into details.
Regardless of timing, analysts expect Apple will reveal an iPhone that alone has the capability of powering an LLM.
