Samsung salary freeze - Good Measure?

Pawan Fangaria

Samsung has reported to freeze salaries of its employees for 2015. It's natural after its profit slump in mobile phone business. It's getting squeezed from Apple on top-end and several others including Xiaomi from low-end. Samsung's profit in 2014 declined by 23.2% to USD 21.2B. The company is also taking other measures to cut costs.

A breather for the employees is that their performance incentives based on profits would not be affected.

In my opinion, this is the best move to have employees around and contributing to the success of the company instead of cutting jobs. In fact, it's a good move to pro-actively manage finance at this initial stage rather than delaying until a situation when job cut becomes inevitable.

My guess is that Samsung's foundry business which is manufacturing chips (at 14nm) for Apple phones would anyway get the benefit of Apple phone sales in this year and next year. And if Samsung Galaxy S6 and Edge provides success, that will bring smile to employees!

My guess is that 2015, if not good, will not be bad either for Samsung. So, it's prudent for the employees to keep working for the success of the company. Other comments welcome!
