Microsoft just released .NET Core 1.0 to run on Linux and OS X (Mac), but also as open source. To save anyone getting worked up about the evil empire having an ulterior motive, of course they have an ulterior motive. They see the open-source movement taking off and either have to buy in or get locked out. .NET Core is a way for them to have a seat at the table, which will certainly be important to their cloud ambitions. Microsoft just maybe has a chance to continue to be relevant and even significant. I'm developing growing respect for Satya Nadella.
We should be very concerned about Microsoft being friendly to Linux and Open Source, because the classic Microsoft business model is to find an existing, successful standard, embrace it, then extend it, making it no longer compatible. Remember what Microsoft did with Java and how the Federal Judge ruled in favor of Oracle against Microsoft. Or how about how Microsoft browsers rarely followed the W3C standards?
Perhaps true under the old guard Daniel, less obviously true under the new regime. Microsoft has certainly sinned in the past but it's not clear to me that the unavoidably must carry those sins forward, especially under a new CEO.
