How far are we from quantum computing? What companies will win the race? Also,u how many ways are there going to be to get to quantum computing? Any thoughts and information on that are going to be use cases the leaders in developing and using it? Thanks
I think we are still a few decades from serious practical use. Quantum computing may mostly be a solution in search of a problem, similar to blockchain (Proof of Work / Proof of Stake) technology from cryptocurrency.
QC's ability to crack encryption still requires you have access to the data sources reliably, and the energy/cost/cooling requirements are still very substantial even for basic quantum computing. Defense and financial firms seem to be leading the way into trying to figure out what it can be used for..
The general level of bullshit about QC seems to be developing very rapidly worldwide. I think it makes the AI industry look conservative by comparison.
Quantum computer is more like 'something that uses cooled atoms which happens to solve prime number problems very very very fast'. It's not really ultimate super parallel-GPU, but an extreme ASIC in nature. Unless quantum 'computing' finds everyday problem which can be quickly solved only by quantum computer, we can't really figure out how long does it take for quantum computer to be practical because no one(except hackers or nations) really wants to buy and use it.
