SemiWiki is a powerful community collaboration tool that I feel may still be in its infancy and whose potential I would like to extend. I would like to bring this power to an opportunity to make the world and ourlives better. One of the skills I have is a very broad, but not deep field of research and the ability to connect thedots.I feel there is a unique opportunity to change the world in a very positive way by linking two technologies that I feel will very shortly come into play when combined. One is a 43% efficient multi junction solar cell and the other is a practical, safe, long life, quick charging carbon/carbon lithium ion battery at reasonable cost. The one downside to this combination is the solar cells require they be on a mobile mount that keeps them pointed at the sun since they rely on a concentrated solar voltaic configuration. Reference links are below. This would be able to eliminate the need to expand the grid, dramatically lower the cost of energy, make electric cars more of a real possibility and give us a cleaner environment to name just a few of the benefits.
Rather than a mobile mount what is needed is a flat panel that acts like numerous mobile mounts with separate lenses on a mems level. Lenses are just one way of doing this and there are several ways of configuring them. There are also dies and material structures that direct light. This could also involve coatings that shift the index of refraction. All these could be controlled on a mems level. This would give a fixed panelthat is far thinner and always pointed at the sun.

Many in the SemiWiki community have worked with light of many frequencies on ways of transporting, focusing, bending and in general figuring new ways of manipulating it. I have little doubt in the creative power of the readers to come up with some very creative and ground breaking solutions, some taking a little known process and applying it to the challenge. Someone might even have a way of making the battery itself part of the solar cell. Also designing a panel so the waste heat can be recovered for heating could bring the efficiency up in the ninety percent range as they have done in <st1:country-region><st1
Israel.

In conclusion, there is ahuge amount of knowledge in the semiconductor field that can be applied with great benefit to many, many other areas just waiting to be mined. As the amount of educated (self and formal) people, computer power, storage, instruments, communications and collaboration increase dramatically, the mountain of knowledge to be mined is increasing at a geometric rate. SemiWiki is already a pioneer and leader in this mining project and projects like this will be just one more step forward in a race of increasing speed.
The solution if found could profoundly change not just solar energy, but many of the fields that use the manipulation of light.
