Data Centers the Cost Effective leaders, Remote layered Data Centers?

With AI/ML and all technologies advancing at an almost exponential rate, data centers offer the best economic model that will expand as the half life of new technologies(both software and hardware) have an ever shorter time to be useful and pay for itself. The question I have is will we have a layered data center structure where we have sub data centers closer to the consumer that are managed by full service data centers to keep the costs down for residential and small businesses. Will computing and software go to a subscription model to keep cost down and the latest technology at our fingertips) Any thoughts or expansions on this would be appreciated.
