CAST takes 8051 to tiny territory

View attachment 13053IP provider CAST Inc. has teamed with design shop Silesia Devices to provide a huge kick to the venerable 8-bit 8051 microcontroller. The new T8051XC3 Tiny 8051 IP core is small. 6.6K gates is all it takes to get a CPU, serial controller, timer/counter, GPIO, interrupt controller, power management, and debug port.

Incredibly, in 90nm the core can be clocked at 450 MHz - giving the T8051XC3 around 300 times the performance of the original Intel 8051. All this comes with full software compatibility, supported by ARM Keil uVision C51 or a new release of IAR Embedded Workbench for 8051. CAST says they are looking for new designs in MEMS sensors, RF, and other subsystems in connected, wearable, or IoT applications.
