Toshiba said today it will sell its memory business to a consortium led by Boston-based Bain Capital for about $18B! Quite an interesting turn of events. The Japanese government is part of the consortium and I'm really happy to see Apple get a big piece of this one. Dell, Seagate, Kingston, and SK Hynix also got smaller pieces. Bad news for Samsung, absolutely.

So, a Apple, Boston private equity firm and the Japanese Government are now in the memory business, interesting times......

Dan, what impact do you see this as having on Samsung, Micron and Hynix?

Hynix is part of the deal so that is a plus for them. The biggest loser is Samsung. It is also good for the semiconductor equipment market. Hopefully this deal goes through. There are still some hurdles.
