Apple working on its own GPU?

In the early days Apple computers used proprietary video cards, then gradually they transitioned to using off-the-shelf video cards instead.

Since Apple already designs their own CPU, then adding a custom-designed GPU does make sense. One day Apple may begin to use 3D stacking for their CPU, GPU and video RAM die.

More likely that Apple just continues on the path of architectural licensing Imagination's PowerVR, and does the necessary customization. The GPUs in the A8X and A9X are already "Apple" designs from an architecture license of PVR.

One wrinkle here might be an Imagination GPU supporting cache coherency, similar to ARM Mimir. That fits in with the PoP and optimized memory bus approach Apple likes to use, and could enable some interesting stuff.
