Job Description and Requirements

This job opening is for an Applications Engineer (AE) on the customer support team of Synopsys’ Optical Solutions group, primarily supporting our LucidShape automotive lighting design software product. LucidShape is used worldwide and is the industry’s leading software for the design and analysis of automotive exterior lighting.

The applicant should have: 

  • Skills in the use of automotive lighting design software (LucidShape preferred)
  • A passion for automotive lighting design, and an interest in helping engineers maximize the capabilities of Synopsys tools while resolving challenging and complex problems
  • An interest in product development
  • An ability to understand optical engineering issues associated with new and advancing technology applications.

The applicant should enjoy interfacing equally well with customers, and the software development, sales, and product teams in a collaborative environment.

The description of duties below, particularly with respect to travel, will apply after the end of the COVID-19 restrictions. Until then, similar duties will apply, but will be conducted remotely.

The primary responsibilities of the position include: 

  • Proactively support LucidShape customers with diverse complex technical questions, efficiently understanding, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving issues in a customer environment
  • Provide technical insight and direction to improve usability, applicability, and adoption of products, platforms, and solutions to meet customer business needs
  • Develop and utilize technical material in a variety of ways, including at training sessions, webinars, customer visits, and user group meetings
  • Partner with sales and customer account technical leaders to identify business challenges, develop effective technical solutions for new accounts, and increase utilization and retention of products at current accounts.

The applicant should possess the following qualifications: 

  • Master/Ph.D. degree in a technical discipline (Optics, Physics, or Mathematics), or a bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of experience as either an automotive lighting designer, or an illumination software applications engineer.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple concurrent projects, and ability to work well in a team as well as independently
  • Strong problem solving, troubleshooting, and organizational skills
  • Ability to understand customer requirements and expectations of a commercial software package
  • Willingness to travel domestically as needed to support customer visits, trade shows and other events.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally occasionally to support customers and attend corporate events.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate highly technical information to others concisely and effectively
  • Business-level written and verbal communication skills in English is a plus
