TSMC (2330) 1.4nm super cluster takes shape, and four plants in the second phase of the Central Taiwan Science Park will take over mass production next year; the Central Taiwan Science Park Administration confirmed yesterday (9th) that TSMC’s second phase of expansion of the 1.4nm plant in the Central Taiwan Science Park is accelerating. The steel structure of the first plant (P1) has been completed and is expected to be tested in April next year, with mass production expected in the second half of next year.

It is understood that TSMC has applied to the Central Taiwan Science Park Administration to build two temporary offices at its facility, which are expected to be completed simultaneously in April next year. The first batch of offices will house more than 5,400 operations and outsourced personnel. This also means that the P1 plant will start trial production in April next year, and mass production may begin in the second half of the year, which is much ahead of the original mass production schedule of 2028.

The Central Taiwan Science Park Administration pointed out that TSMC's new advanced process plant in the second phase of the Central Taiwan Science Park broke ground last October, with plans to build four 1.4-nanometer fabs. Nearly 2,000 workers are working day and night to complete the project. The first fab, P1, has completed its steel structure and is currently undergoing floor and exterior wall construction, with the plant expected to be completed early next year. As for the second fab (P2), the foundation construction, including concrete pouring, has begun, followed by steel structure work. If the project proceeds as planned, it will be completed in October next year, and both 1.4-nanometer fabs are expected to begin mass production ahead of schedule next year.

At the end of last month, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen, together with the city government team, visited the new plant site to understand the progress of the project and subsequent investment needs. She expressed strong confidence in TSMC's investment in Taichung, and the city government will do its utmost to assist in the investment's implementation.

The Taichung City Government Economic Development Bureau pointed out that TSMC's third plant (P3) in the Central Taiwan Science Park has already obtained a building permit, and the fourth plant (P4) is currently applying for a building permit. The Central Taiwan Science Park Administration mentioned that the four new plants in the Central Taiwan Science Park are planned to be built with a six-month interval. The P3 plant is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2028, and the P4 plant is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of the same year.

Once the P2 plant is completed in the second half of next year, it will add another 1,000 operational staff. When all four new plants in Phase II are completed and put into operation, the total number of employees is expected to be between 9,000 and 10,000.

The Central Taiwan Science Park Administration pointed out that after TSMC's new 1.4-nanometer plant is completed and put into mass production, the annual revenue is estimated at NT$500 billion according to the previous preparation briefing. However, the actual revenue can only be estimated after the production capacity of the Hsinchu Science Park Baoshan Plant 2 is available. Based on the current process costs and market demand, "NT$500 billion may be an underestimation."

I'm sure we will get an update at the next forum but from what I hear from customers A14 is doing quite well and again will have more design starts than N2 which is amazing. When will this AI surge end? Exciting times in the semiconductor ecosystem, absolutely!
