What happened to the neon shortage?

I would guess the near-term answer is that the popular press got bored with the story. I also understand that the semi industry has been stockpiling neon for a long time. Note the early 2016 date on this story.

The NPR article does say the price of Neon is up 5,000%. If true I assume that’s part of the price increases we keep hearing about from TSMC and Intel.. that kind of price range increase would probably price out other uses of Neon granting the chip makers a higher % of the supply.
