Samsung Denies Reuters Report on HBM Quality Issues

Samsung Electronics has firmly denied a Reuters report alleging that its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) products failed to meet Nvidia’s quality standards. The report, which cited issues such as excessive heat generation and power consumption, claimed that Samsung’s HBM products had not yet passed Nvidia’s rigorous tests.

In a statement released on May 24, Samsung Electronics refuted these claims, asserting that it is “smoothly conducting tests for HBM supply with various global partners.” The company emphasized that it is “continuously testing technology and performance in close cooperation with multiple companies” to ensure the quality and reliability of its products.

HBM technology, which significantly increases data processing speed by vertically stacking multiple DRAM chips, is becoming increasingly vital with the rapid growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) market. As demand for HBM surges, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are locked in a fierce battle for market dominance.

Despite its historical leadership in the memory semiconductor industry, Samsung has been losing market share in the HBM sector to SK hynix, a situation that has prompted significant strategic shifts within the company.

In response to these competitive pressures, Samsung recently replaced the head of its Device Solutions (DS) division, which oversees the semiconductor business.

This leadership change underscores the company’s commitment to regaining its footing in the HBM market. Last month, Samsung began mass production of its fifth-generation HBM product, HBM3E 8-layer, and aims to start mass production of the industry’s first HBM3E 12-layer product in the second quarter of this year.

Addressing the Reuters report, Samsung Electronics reiterated its dedication to quality and reliability. “We are making efforts to improve quality and enhance reliability for all our products,” the company stated. “We are rigorously testing the quality and performance of our HBM products to provide the best solutions to our customers.”

Despite these assurances, some market analysts remain skeptical about Samsung’s ability to close the gap with its competitor SK hynix in the short term.
