Why so many cores? Isn't 128 enough in a package? Is this a marketing thing?

Who's in charge here? There are only a few leading edge foundries. Tell that customer to stick it.

Keep in mind, these cores don't have hyper-threading, so 144 cores means 144 threads, not 288 as it would mean with bigger AMD or Intel processors that use a form of SMT.

Also, if you look at the size and number of pins on the processor, it's fairly certain it has a lot of memory channels to feed those cores.

Since sales of these parts are to informed buyers, not Joe and Susie who live next to Bob in the neighborhood, I'd have to believe they properly assess some value in what would seem like an excessive amount of cores; they probably understand their needs at least moderately well.
