China Has Made a Record 140 Billion Chips So Far This Year!

Historically, China is the largest consumer of semiconductor based devices but has not made many of the chips for these devices. Over then past 10 years China has made significant investment in the semiconductor supply chain and that is now visible in their manufacturing capability. If you look at the semiconductor equipment sector China has been a big buyer of late. We are now seeing the results of those purchases.

According to the South China Morning post and the National Bureau of Statistics, In May of 2021 China produced 29.9 billion chips, up 37%+ from the same month a year ago. While most of these chips are memory, logic is also keeping pace.

In total 140 billion chips have been made this year in China which is an increase of more than 48% in the first five months of 2020. While some of these chips are made by non China companies such as Intel, Samsung, and SK Hynix (3D NAND), China's own semiconductor manufacturing capability is clearly ramping up.

Let's hope the same thing happens in the US and other parts of the world, absolutely.

Total Telecom says China will be self-sufficient in 28nM ICs this year, and in 14 nM next year. Anyone??

Last I looked SMIC 14nm was a very small portion of revenue, single digits, so probably not. FinFETs are hard to yield and SMIC 14nm is not compatible with Samsung and TSMC 14nm/16nm. SMIC 28nm on the other hand is compatible with TSMC 28nm so self sufficiency is a much better bet.

It's easy to dissemble with semiconductor statistics.
- If it's packaged in China, but diffused in, say, Taiwan, does that count toward the figure?
- If the producer is foreign, Samsung, Hynix or TSMC for example, does that count toward the figure?
In other words, a figure with no details is very suspect.

impossible.
28nm Chinese DUV not available yet. 2021 is impossible. 2022 the chance is low. Hard to say in 2023.

14nm still under sanction.
SMIC stop disclosing 14nm portion and combined with 28nm/14nm.

This 140 billion Chinese chip production from January to May 2021 is a bit strange to me. The world population is only around 7.8 billion and China is not even the biggest country in semiconductor manufacturing. And there are seven months to go before the year end!

Is this 5-month 140 billion units a realistic number?

I suppose the satistics include discret componts such as diodes

Well, it was always a big jawdropper how China, the world's biggest semiconductor market, had so little semi manufacturing.

With 0 tax rate for anything semiconductor related, it's very hard to screwup a semi business there. I myself knew an owner of one MCU maker in China, now made a billionaire by stockmarket listing. He says he could've never imagined that a mere MCU can make so much money. He had much lower expectations when he started the company, and thought that he will sell to first minimally credible offer.

If China decides they want to do something, they do it. It may take a lot of time and money, but they they have the will to get there eventually.
