AI is just application programming - recent protein folding success example

There has been recent advances in algorithms to translate protein
sequences into protein structure. As usual Google is calling its
program Alphafold a great AI success. Reality is that it is just good
application programming using physical theories from molecular bonding
area. Program is written in Python and runs on Linux. There is an
alternative program from academics that is almost as good and
uses much less computing time called RoseTTAFold. Here is an
ars Technica story.


The recent protein folding programs are very good but they have not
really solved the protein folding problem. Here is a blog explaining
why the programs do not solve the protein folding problem.


In reality there are still open scientific problems in the orbital
symmetry organic chemistry area. For example, there is a reaction called
the Diels Alder reaction that was awarded the 1950 Nobel Prize in chemistry
that is still not understood.

I can understand why calling a program an "AI" program is useful
in getting grants, but wouldn't computer science benefit from more
objective language.

Maybe my Verilog simulator would sell better if I called it an AI
Verilog simulator.
