SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 24, 2023 – Intel and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation announced today that company co-founder Gordon Moore has passed away at the age of 94.

The foundation reported he died peacefully on Friday, March 24, 2023, surrounded by family at his home in Hawaii.

Moore and his longtime colleague Robert Noyce founded Intel in July 1968. Moore initially served as executive vice president until 1975, when he became president. In 1979, Moore was named chairman of the board and chief executive officer, posts he held until 1987, when he gave up the CEO position and continued as chairman. In 1997, Moore became chairman emeritus, stepping down in 2006.

Moore was indeed a very good/excellent most important creator/developper of the semiconductor industry, being initially in the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory then creating Fairchild Semiconductor International, Inc. before later cofounding Intel in which he then further increased/boosted the semiconductor role/activity…
(i) with his “Moore’s law” to be able to double at a stable cost/price the number of transistors in a microchip every 2 years thanks to the transition to new advanced/shrinked technology,
(ii) then later Tick-Tock roadmaps to initially move existing designed chips into the new most advanced/shrinked state of art technology (Tick…) before putting new designed chips in this new most advanced/shrinked state of art technology (Tock…)…

He was very healthy, both for the semiconductor industry and also for himself as he remained very long in good life, close to become a centenarian…
But even now a bit of few years before he dies, many of his good historical models collapsed or changed or disappeared/died in many of the semiconductor companies…
(i) Intel since their 10nm and many others except few ones like TSMC were not able to move quickly within couple of years to a next technology which stopped the “Moore’s law” which was also moved in France/Europe by STMicroelectronics (and Infineon…) to the “More than Moore” which is the “death” -the “Mort”- of the pure Moore’s law to rather focus on the global usage and related optimized architecture but not always/often just migrating a component to new state of art technology…
(ii) Same for the Tick-Tock which was previously also done for example by Apple for their AP designed chips manufactured by Samsung before their transition to TSMC in which they are then now regularly making a kind of “Tick-Tick”, using systematically within ~ 1 (not 2…) year some huge volumes of their new designed chips in TSMC new state of art technology (not yet used before…)…
