Combining system simulation and 3D CFD for haemodynamic modeling

Since the advent of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the biomedical sector, there has been a progressive trend towards the use of in-silico methods for surgical planning and evaluation. Establishing a credible model for CFD haemodynamic studies necessitates adhering to best practices. Additionally, a repeatable methodology must be established and implemented when completing inter-patient studies of a common vascular region. Both aspects present the potential of automating several tasks within the pre-processing phase of the CFD simulation process, a desirable attribute of research, industrial, and potential clinical practices.

The research related with the presented work is focused on the haemodynamics associated with an arteriovenous fistula (AVF). AVFs are surgically created native connections in the arm of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. The CFD studies investigated the prominence of haemodynamics on the success and performance of AVFs across a cohort of CKD patients, based on the results ascertained from Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulations and from coupling Simcenter Amesim with Simcenter STAR-CCM+.

A major advantage of CFD-based AVF investigations is the detailed analysis of the haemodynamic environment and calculation of haemodynamic metrics non-measurable in-vivo, both in the pre-surgical and post-operative stages. The obtained flow rates and wall shear stress distributions throughout key stages of the fistula development can be utilized for informing future surgical planning or reintervention procedures. In order to make CFD a vital tool clinically, validation with retrospective data and a rapid turnaround time with minimal user input from scanning to CFD post-processing are required. This is a key point of Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and the presented work. The webinar demonstrates the challenges associated with this research and the use of Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Simcenter Amesim in overcoming them.
