Accurately Predicting Fibrous Material Behavior Using Numerical Simulations

November 6, 2019

This webinar presents how Bissell has improved a pet hair vacuum cleaner by using CFD-DEM integrated simulations to model a large number of hair strands that depict specific characteristics, such as flexibility and inter-fiber interaction.

Using Rocky DEM’s realistic fiber-particle shape and ANSYS Fluent high-fidelity CFD solution yields a highly accurate model. It enables conceptual device testing, reducing the number of lab-tested prototypes and, therefore, minimizing development time and cost.

Agenda:

  • Introduction to particle simulation with Rocky DEM
  • Fiber model application
  • ANSYS Fluent and Rocky DEM integrated solution
  • Bissel case study: pet hair vacuum cleaner

    Presented by:

    Kon Leung, Ph.D.
    Bissell Homecare, Inc.

Kon Leung is a project manager and staff engineer with 20+ years of computer-aided engineering (CAE) experience in structural analysis, method development, and project management in automotive, aerospace, and academic environments. He manages Bissell’s team of global CAE engineers to perform multidisciplinary CAE analyses for a wide range of floor care products. Leung holds a Ph.D. in civil engineering.

Lucilla Almeida, Dr.
ESSS

Lucilla holds a B.E. (chemical) undergraduate degree, an M.Sc. in chemical engineering, and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She joined ESSS in 2008 and has spent five years focused on applying CFD to solve common engineering problems in the oil and gas industry, dealing with turbulent and multiphase flow simulations. Since 2013, she has been an application engineer for the Rocky DEM business unit.
